Copenhagen, Denmark (4 Days)

DAY 1 

1) Free Walking Tour 

Book at http://www.copenhagenfreewalkingtours.dk/index.html. The 10am Grand Tour of Copenhagen meets on the steps of the City Hall on Rådhuspladsen and ends by 1pm at the Marmorkirken (Marble Church).

2) Marmorkirken (Marble Church) (Mon-Thurs & Sat 10am – 5pm, Fri & Sun 12pm – 5pm)

3) Amalienborg Slot (Closed Mon, Tues – Sun 11am – 4pm)

The exhibits are not particularly exciting in Amalienborg but do stop by for the free bathrooms should you need. Changing of the Guards occurs at 12pm.

Nearby Eating Option: Restaurant Amalie (Amaliegade 11, Mon- Sat 11:30am – 4pm).  The most down-to-earth service and excellent smorrebrods. The fried plaice fillet was absolutely divine – buttery and melt-in-your-mouth. Gravadlax was excellent too. Reservations recommended.

4) Nyhavn

5) Papiroeen (Mon-Wed & Sun 12pm – 9pm, Thurs-Sat 12pm – 10pm)

A walk over the bridge from Nyhavn will bring you to Paper Island for stalls of street food in an indoor setting.

DAY 2

1) Rosenborg Slot (Tues – Sun 10am – 2pm until 4/15, Mon – Sun 10am – 4pm from 4/16)

Worth a look for the crown jewels exhibit located in the basement.

2) Botanical Have (8:30am – 6pm daily)

The free Botanical Gardens are located across from Rosenborg Slot. You can take M1/M2 from Norreport to Kongens Nytorv and walk 20 minutes to see the Little Mermaid, Gefion Fountain, and Kastellet. You will pass by the entrance to Kastellet and Gefion Fountain on your way to see the Little Mermaid.

4) Louisiana Museum of Modern Art (Closed Monday, Tues-Fri 11am – 10pm, Sat-Sun 11am – 6pm)

From Copenhagen Central Station, take the Oresund train to Humlebaek station (towards Helsingor St). There 3 trains an hour (xx:12, xx:32, xx:52). The train ride takes 34 min. From Humlebaek station, you can either walk to Louisiana (15 min – signage is available) or walk over stop the bus stop and take bus 388 to Louisiana – the bus is included in your ticket from Copenhagen. You can check timetables here: http://www.rejseplanen.dk/. Return times: (xx:14, xx:40, xx:54) towards CPH Lufthavn. Get off Kobenhavn.

DAY 3

1) Frederiksborg Castle (Mon-Sun 10 – 5pm)

From Central Station, catch any train headed to Osterport. Transfer to the E line train at Osterport to Hillerød, the last stop.  Service persons are available at Central and Osterport stations to direct you to the correct platforms for your desired trains. You may then catch the bus 301, 302 or 324 lines from the bus terminal outside the Hillerod station or take a 20 minute leisurely walk to the castle. Behind the castle, there is a wonderful baroque garden overlooking the lake Slotsø whose entrance is free. Check http://www.rejseplanen.dk/ for any track work train changes.

Nearby Eating Options: Returning to Central Station and leaving from the Vesterbrogade exit, turn left, passing the racks of bicycles, to go down the stairs to find Istedgade street. On Istedgade street, you will find some Thai restaurants. Some options are Thai Corner at Istedgade 38 & Baan Thai Isarn at Lille Istegade 7.

2) Tivoli Gardens (Sun – Sat 11am – 11pm)

Opposite the Central Station, all rides inside Tivoli Gardens are extra and not included in the entrance fee.

DAY 4

1) Breakfast at Grod (Linnésgade 17, 7:30am – 7pm)

Treat yourself to apple and caramel oatmeal at this spot inside Torvehallerne. From Grod, take M1/M2 from Norreport (towards Lufthavnen St) to Christianshavn St.

2) Church of Our Savior (Mon-Sat 10am – 4pm, Sunday 10:30 am – 4pm)

Climb up the spires for a view over Copenhagen. My advice is to get there early right when it opens. There is only one way up and down the spires with room for single file only, which means there will be a wait to get in and to get out.

3) Christiania

You can check out this small autonomous community whose entrance is located at the back of the Church of Our Savior.

Walk 14 minutes to the next attraction:

4) Christiansborg Slot (Closed Monday, 10am – 5pm)

In the basement of the building, there’s the excavation of Viking and Roman forts on top of which the parliament building was built.

Nearby Eating Option: DOP (Købmagergade 52, 11am – 6pm) for Danish hot dogs

5) Nationalmuseet (Closed Monday, Tues-Sun 10am – 5pm)

A 17 minute walk brings you to:

6) Torvehallerne (10am – 7pm, Sun 11am – 5pm)

A brand new indoor market at Norreport State with a multitude of food choices.

7) Stroget

The longest pedestrianized shopping area. 

Budget Eating Option: Riz Raz (Kompagnistræde 20) – Vegetarian buffet lunch 89 DKK and dinner 99 DKK
